Bhadrapad Month (Bhadra Mahina, Bhadrapada Masam), is the 6th month of Hindu calendar followed in North India, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. In 2017 Bhadrapad month begins on August 13 and ends on September 12 as per North Indian Hindu calendars. According to Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu and Kannada Panchangam, Bhadrapada masa begins on August 30 and ends on September 27. Bhadra month is also called as Bhadon month as per Nanakshahi Sikh calendar.
Important Festivals in Bhadrapad Month:

In Bhadrapad month as per North Indian calendars, Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Rushi Panchami, Varaha Jayanti and Anant Chaturdashi are the mainfestivals. And as per the panchangs of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat, the important festivals celebrated during Bhadrapad month are – Vinayaka Chavithi, Rishi Panchami, Vamana Jayanthi and Ananta Chaturdasi.

Sashti Viratham September 2017 Date Monthly Shashti Fasting Dedicated to Muruga

Sashti Viratham is observed on the sixth day during the Shukla Paksha or bright phase of moon as per a traditional Hindu calendar. Sashti Viratham September 2017 date is September 3. It is a monthly fasting dedicated to Hindu god Muruga (known as Kartik in North and western parts of India). Special pujas and rituals are also held on the day in Muruga Temples.

Muruga, also known as Skanda, Vadivela, Shanmukha and Subramanian, is widely worshipped in South India, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa and Sri Lanka especially by Tamilians and Malayalis. In North India, Muruga is known as Kartik or Kartikeya.Fasting on Sashti is considered highly beneficial and some devotees observe a complete fast for 24 hours.

There are two Sashti fasting dates in a month one each during the waxing phase of moon and another during the waning phase of moon. Most devotees fast during the Sashti falling during waxing phase of moon.
