Tulsi Puja, also known as Tulsi Vivah or Tulasi Shaligram Puja, is observed during the waxing phase of the moon in Kartik month. Tulsi, Holy Basil, is associated with Lord Krishna and is found in majority of Hindu homes and lamp is lit in front of it and worshiped daily. In 2011, the date of Tulsi Puja is November 6 for those observing it on Uthana Ekadasi. November 7 for those communities observing it on Karthika Shuddha Dwadashi or the day after Ekadasi. Some communities observe it on Kartik Purnima, which is on November 10.

Tulsi Vivah The tulsi plant is held sacred by the Hindus as it is regarded as an incarnation of Mahalaxmi who was born as Vrinda. The festival of Tulsi Vivah is celebrated in each and every household of Goa. The one special feature of the festival is that of preparing various delicious sweet dishes at home. The women folk engage themselves in preparations well in advance. A typical Goan ojhe (load of sweets) is sent to the daughter from her parental home along with jodi (cotton threads used to light lamp while performing aarti).

Tulsi was married to demon king Jalandhar. But she prayed to Lord Vishnu that her demon husband would be protected, with the result that no god was able to harm him. However on the request of the other gods, Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and stayed with the unsuspecting Tulsi. When the truth emerged after Jalandhar's death, Vrinda crused Vishnu and turned him to stone (Shaligram) and collapsed. From her body emerged the tulsi plant. That is why Vishnu pooja is considered incomplete without tulsi leaves. Tulsi vivah is celebrated on the next day of Kartiki Akadashi. On this day tulsi is married to Shaligram.
On this day tulsivrindavan is coloured and decorated as a bride. Sugarcane and branches of tamarind and amla trees are planted along with the tulsi plant. Only vegetarian food is cooked on this day. At midday, a full meal consisting of rice, moongachi gathi, puri , sweet potato kheer , red pumpkin vegetable cooked with pieces of sugarcane, amla and tamarind is offered to Tulsi Vrindavan. Tulsi vivah ceremony takes place in the late evening. Various poha dishes are offered to Lord Vishnu. Vidhi / Method of Performing the Puja

In the evening, after seeing the star, the women of the house get together for puja. In some houses both men & women do the puja.
The 4 wick Deepak is placed on the pata.
Oil/ghee is put in the Deepak with the Four Wicks.
The Cowrie shell is placed on the Deepak.
The Deepak is lit. This is referred as Yamadeep. This Deepak pleases Yamaraj and the pitars/departed ancestors of the family.
Some water from the panchpatra is sprinkled around the Deepak, puja is performed with roli, chawal and money.
Four suhali and little pethas are offered.
Some people offer kheel and batasha also Dhoop is lit.
Women performing the puja go around the Deepak four times & do pranam.
The eldest woman of the family or unmarried girl of the house puts tilak from the roli in the chopda to everyone sitting for the puja.
One male staff member of the house, covers his head with a cloth, takes the lit Deepak and keeps it outside on the right side of the main gate. This person is given dakshina.
After puja, the family members do pranaam to all the elder people to them.

Numerous minor deities including many attendants and guards of Durga are worshipped on the day. A fast is observed by staunch Durga devotees on Durga Ashtami. Both men and women observe the fast. Shakti temples conduct special pujas on the day and are visited by millions of devotees.

Durgashtami day ends with Sandhi puja, which overlaps into the next day which is the Mahanavami day.

Ekadashi August 2015 Dates Monthly Fasting for Hindu God Vishnu

Ekadashi, or Ekadasi Vrat, is observed on the eleventh day of a fortnight in a Hindu lunar calendar. The date (s) of Ekadashi in August 2011 – August 9 and August 25. The day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and many devotees undertake Upvaas or fasting on the day. There are two Ekadashis in a lunar month.

The Ekadashi Vrat on August 9, 2011 is known as Pavitra Ekadashi. In some regions this Ekadasi is known as Putrada Ekadasi.

The Ekadasi on August 25, 2011 is known as Aja Ekadasi. In North India and in some parts of eastern India, the Ekadasi is referred as Jaya Ekadasi.

The preparation for Ekadashi fasting begins on the Dasami day – the day before Ekadasi. On the Ekadasi day, devotees observe complete fast. The day is meant for hearing religious discourses and performing pujas.

There are also devotees who do not observe total fast. They avoid grains especially rice and consume fruits, nuts and milk.

The fasting comes to an end on the Dwadashi day with the consuming of food cooked in one’s house.

Ashwathama in Mahabharata Why He Is Still Alive? | Ashwathama Chiranjeevis | Ashwathama in Rajasthan

Ashwathama is one among the seven Chiranjeevis (without death) mentioned in the Puranas – as a result of curse by Sri Krishna he still alive and roams on earth with a body full of oozing warts. Ashwathama is the son of Drona and Kripi. He got the name Ashwathama as he cried like a horse when he was born.

At the end of the Mahabharata war only Ashwathama, Kripar and Krittivarma survived. Before dying, Duryodhana made Ashwathama the leader of the Kauravas. He promised Duryodhana that he will kill all the Pandavas.

That night Ashwathama walked into the tent of the Pandvas and killed all the sons of Pandavas and set the camp on fire.

Arjuna and Bhima went after Ashwathama to kill him. On seeing them approaching he used the Brahmastra which had the power to cause massive destruction.

Arjuna also used his Brahmastra to vanquish Ashwathama.

If the two brahmastras collide it will be the end of the world. All the saints who witnessed the battle requested Arjuna and Aswhathama to take back the Brahmastra.

Sri Krishna agreed to take back the Brahmastra released by Arjuna.

But Ashwathama did not know how to retrieve a Brahmastra. Blinded by hatred and vengeance, he directed it towards the womb of Uttara who was pregnant with the child of Abhimanyu. This was the only child left in the family of the Pandavas.

The fetus was protected by Sri Krishna and therefore it did not have any harm.

But for his evil acts, Sri Krishna cursed Ashwathama to roam around the world with oozing warts.

Khairatabad Ganesha idol 2015 for Ganesh Chaturthi

For Ganesh Chaturthi 2015, Khairatabad Ganesh idol in Hyderabad would be the one among the largest Ganesha idols in India. Khairatabad Ganesh idol known for its mammoth size, is the largest Ganesh idol in India for every Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganesh Festival. Like every year, in 2011, it will be the largest once again with over 50 feet height. In 2011, this mammoth Ganapati is called as Mooshika Vahana Ganesha. It is to note that Ganesh Chaturthi 2011 date is September 1.
For Ganesh Chaturthi 2011, the Ganapathi vigraham model is released for media. A globe of 20 feet breadth and 4 feet height is built and on that a Mooshika (rodent / rat) of 15 feet height is constructed. On Mooshikam, Lord Ganapathi vigraham of 30 feet height is constructed. Lord Vinayaka will have 18-hooded giant serpent of 5 feet height is designed. Estimated that this year the Mammoth Ganesha idol will go much higher than ever with 55-feet height.
The right side of the statue will have the model of Vemulawada Rajarajeshwara swamy temple and the right side will have an idol of Goddess Gajalakshmi (Lakshmi Devi sitting on an elephant) or Goddess Durga sitting on the tiger.
Mr. Sudarshan, Organizer of Khairatabad Mammoth Ganesh Utsav Committee, addressed the media and explained about the concept of Mooshika Ganapathi idol and other details about constructing the idol. He said, “It will take approximately two months to complete the mammoth Ganapati. Totally, 100 people are working for the idol. The height of the idol will be over 50 feet. The idol will be ready by the last week of August 2011.”

Navratri in September – October 2015, much popular as Durga Navaratri, is a 10-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga or Shakti. Saran Durga Navaratri 2011 starts on September 28 and ends on 6 October 2011. Kalasha Sthapana or Ghata Sthapana date is September 28 and Vijayadasami or Dasara is on October 6. The birthday of the Ai Kavi (the first poet), Valmiki is celebrated on the full moon day of Ashvina (September - October). Valmiki is the author of the so-celebrated Ramayana in Sanskrit. He was contemporary of Rama, the hero of the Ramayana. Valmiki himself represented as taking part in some of these scenes he relates. He received the banished Sita into his hermitage and educated her twin sons Kusha and lava. The invention of the "Shioka" (epic meter) is attributed to Valmiki.

Originally, Valmiki belonged to a depressed class and was a sort of robber. He robbed and even killed the people passing through the forest, but because of the influence of some sages, he repented and betook himself to a hermitage on a hill in the district of Bonda in Bundelkhanda. There, he is said to have eventually received Sita, when banished by Rama.

He got his name "Valmiki" because when immersed in meditation, he allowed himself to be overrun with ants like an anthill. His original name was "Ratnakar". Many depressed classes in the country trace their lineage to Valmiki. On his birthday he is worshipped and prayed and his portraits are taken out in gay processions through the main bazaars and streets. Kirtans are also held in Valmiki temples.

About Lord Vishnu - Preserver or Sustainer of life

The peace-loving deity of the Hindu Trinity, Vishnu is the Preserver or Sustainer of life with his steadfast principles of order, righteousness and truth. When these values are under threat, Vishnu emerges out of his transcendence to restore peace and order on earth.

The 10 Avatars:

Vishnu’s earthly incarnations have many avatars. His ten avatars are Matsyavatara (fish), Koorma (tortoise), Varaaha (boar), Narasimha (the man lion), Vaamana (the dwarf), Parasurama (the angry man), Lord Rama (the perfect human of the Ramayana), Lord Krishna (the divine diplomat and statesman), and the yet to appear 10th incarnation called the Kalki avatar.
In his commonest form, Vishnu is portrayed as having a dark complexion – the color of passive and formless ether, and with four hands.

Sankha, Chakra, Gada, Padma:

On one of the backhands he holds the milky white conch shell or ‘sankha’ that spreads the primordial sound of Om, and on the other a discuss or ‘chakra’ - a reminder of the cycle of time - which is also a lethal weapon that he uses against blasphemy. It is the famous Sudarshana Chakra that is seen whirling on his index finger. The other hands hold a lotus or ‘padma’, which stands for a glorious existence, and a mace or ‘gada’ that indicates punishment for indiscipline.

The Lord of Truth:

Out of his navel blossoms a lotus, known as Padmanabham. The flower holds Brahma, the God of Creation and the embodiment of royal virtues or ‘Rajoguna’. Thus, the peaceful form of Lord Vishnu discards the royal virtues through his navel and makes the Sheshnag snake that stands for the vices of darkness or ‘Tamoguna’, his seat. Therefore Vishnu is the Lord of ‘Satoguna’ - the virtues of the truth.

The Presiding Deity of Peace:

Vishnu is often depicted as reclining on a Sheshanaga – the coiled, many-headed snake floating on cosmic waters that represents the peaceful Universe. This pose symbolizes the calm and patience in the face of fear and worries that the poisonous snake represents. The message here is that you should not let fear overpower you and disturb your peace.

Garuda, the Vehicle:

The vehicle of Vishnu is the Garuda eagle, the king of the birds. Empowered with the courage and speed to spread the knowledge of the Vedas, Garuda is an assurance of fearlessness at the time of calamity.

Vishnu is also known as Narayana and Hari. The devout followers of Vishnu are called Vaishnavas, and his consort is Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty.

Shayani Ekadashi (lit. "sleeping eleventh") or Maha-ekadashi (lit. "The great eleventh") or Padma Ekadashi is the eleventh lunar day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla paksha) of the Hindu month of Ashadha (June - July). Thus it is also known as Ashadhi Ekadashi or Ashadhi. This holy day is of special significance to Vaishnavas, followers of Hindu preserver god Vishnu.
It is believed that Vishnu falls asleep in Ksheersagar - cosmic ocean of milk - on Shesha nāga, the cosmic serpent. Thus the day is also called Dev-Shayani Ekadashi (lit. "god-sleeping eleventh") or Hari-shayani Ekadashi (lit. "Vishnu-sleeping eleventh") or Shayana Ekadashi. Vishnu finally awakens from his slumber four months later on Prabodhini Ekadashi - eleventh day of bright fortnight in the Hindu month Kartik (October-November). This period is known as Chaturmas (lit. "four months") and coincides with the rainy season. Thus, Shayani Ekadashi is the beginning of Chaturmas. Devotees start observing the Chaturmas vrata (vow) to please Vishnu on this day.
A fast is observed on Shayani Ekadashi. The fast demands abstainance from all grains, beans, cereals, certain vegetables like onions and certain spices and all kinds of meat and eggs.

Around January 14, every year sun begins its six-months-long journey northwards or in Uttarayan and moves into the zodiac Capricorn or Makaram Rashi. This celestial event is celebrated as Pongal in South India.

Pongal Festival marks the end of cold winter months and the advent of spring. From this time the length of days gradually increases in the Northern Hemisphere. Celebration of Pongal lasts for four days from the last day of the Tamil month Maargazhi (December-January) to the third day of Thai that is the month of January - February according to Western Calendar. It is the second and the main day of the festival that is celebrated as Pongal every year.

Pongal is celebrated when the fields are blooming. The festival is thus a celebration of prosperity and good harvest especially for the farming community. During the Pongal celebrations farmers express their gratitude to Sun God and the cattle and thank them for a good harvest.

The festival of Pongal is celebrated as Makar Sankranti in central India and Bhugali Bihu in Assam while people in West Bengal, celebrate the last day of Bengali month Paush on January 14. Here, thousands of devotees take bath in Gangasagar, the point where the holy river Ganga meets the sea, to wash away all the earthly sins.

18. Take the thirtham and drink while chanting the slokam before taking thirtham (charanamruth). Do this three times separately.

19. Take prasadam for yourself and also distribute it to everyone who are there during Puja and also welcome other devotees and distribute thirtham and prasada.

Bathukamma Panduga in 2015 Telangana Saddula Batukamma Festival 2015

Bathukamma Panduga or Bathukamma festival is the largest regional festival in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. In 2015, Bathukamma festival date is October 4. Bathukamma panduga starts on Mahalaya Amavasya which falls on September 27 in 2011 and ends on October 4, 2011 with Chaddula Bathukamma or Pedda Bathukamma or Chattala Bathukamma. Pradosham Vrat September 2015 Dates Monthly Fasting for Shiva

Pradosham is a monthly fasting dedicated to Hindu God Shiva in a Hindu lunar month. In September 2011, the dates of Pradosh are September 9 and September 25. On the day, prayers are offered during the twilight period to Shiva and Parvati. Fasting from sunrise to sunset is observed on Pradosham day.

There are two Pradoshams – one during the waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) of moon and another during the waning phase (Krishna Paksha) of moon. It is said that Shiva and Parvati are in a happy mood during Pradosham period and they shower blessings on devotees.

Pradosham begins around 1.5 hours before sunset and end one hour after sunset. Most Shiva devotees mainly spend this time at a Shiva temple. If at home devotees chant any of the mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva or read the Shiva Purana.

There are staunch Shiva devotees who fast on both the Pradosham. Some people only observe one Pradosham in a month.

Biswakarma Puja September 2015 Date Festival

Biswakarma Puja is an important festival in Eastern India and is dedicated to Vishwakarma, the divine architect of the architect of the universe according to Hindu Scriptures. Kolu Photo Contest 2015 during Navarathri by The Hindu

Bommai Kolu, or Bommala Koluvu, is the artistic display of dolls by women during Navarathri and Dusshera in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and among certain communities in Kerala. The Hindu newspaper is conducting a Kolu Photo Contest this Navratri – Kolu Kondattam. To participate all you need to do is to send a picture of the kolu you created in your home by September 30, 2011.

Pradosham in October 2015 Dates Monthly Fast Dedicated to Shiva

Pradosham is a monthly fasting day dedicated to Hindu God Shiva. The day occurs twice during the Hindu lunar month. Pradosham dates in October 2015 – October 9 and October 24. Prayers are offered to Shiva and Goddess Parvati during the twilight period on the day.

The Pradosham on October 24 is on Monday and therefore it is also known as Som Pradosham.

Pradosham as the name indicates is a period just before sunset and after sunset. Loosely the Pradosham period is between 1.5 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunset.

Devotees fasting on the Pradosham day, break their fasting after the evening prayers.

Swami Ram Tirtha Jayanti Birth Anniversary

Swami Ram Tritha Jayanti is the birth anniversary of the Swami Ram Tirtha, who was a great teacher of Hindu philosophy and Vedanata and one of the notable teachers who worked tirelessly in spreading the true teachings of Vedanta in the West. Swami Ram Tirtha Jayanti date is October 5. It is observed annually on the Shukla Paksha Navami day in Ashwin month – ninth day of the waxing phase of moon.

Swami Ram Tirtha, also known as Swami Rama and Swami Ram Tirath, was the most famous Hindu saint to visit the American universities after Swami Vivekananda. During his travel to America in 1902 he gave lectures on practical Vedanta and this attracted thousands of people.

Vishwakarma Pooja & Govardhan Pooja : The fourth day of Diwali, ie the day after Diwali, falls on Padyami, the first day of the Kartika Masa, and is called Vishvakarma Day/ Gudi Padwa/Govardhan Puja.

Vishwakarma Pooja: The day is celebrated to worship Vishwakarma. Vishvakarma was the divine architect, and one of the fourteen precious things born of the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocen to gain Amrita, the nectar of immortality). He constructed the holy city of Dwarka where Lord Krishna ruled, The Maya Sabha of the Pandavas and was the creator of many fabulous weapons for the gods. This day is often used by manufacturers to pray for their equipment so that it works well and makes profit during the year ahead.

Govardhana Puja. Govardhan is a small hillock in Braj, near Mathura and on this day of Diwali people of North India build cow dung, hillocks, decorate them with flowers and then worship them. This festival is in commemoration of the lifting of Mount Govardhan by Krishna. As per Vishnu-Puran the people of Gokul used to celebrate a festival in honor of Lord Indra and worshiped him after the end of every monsoon season but one particular year the young Krishna stopped them from offering prayers to Lord Indra and asked them to worship cattle instead. Indra in terrific anger sent a deluge to submerge Gokul. People were afraid that the downpour was a result of their neglect of Indra. But Krishna assured them that no harm would befall them. He lifted Mount Govardhan with his little finger and sheltered men and beasts from the rain. This gave him the name Govardhandhari.

It is also on this day that the King Bali would come out of Pathal Loka and rule the earth for one day as per the boon given by Lord Vishnu. Hence, it is also known as “Bali Padyami”.

This day also marks the coronation of King Vikramaditya and Vikarama-Samvat – the counting of the Vikram era, was started from this Padwa day.

Gudi Padwa is symbolic of love and devotion between the wife and husband. On this day newly-married daughters with their husbands are invited for special meals and given presents. In olden days brothers went to fetch their sisters from their in-laws
home for this important day.
