Magh Mela 2012 – Magh Mela dates January, February in 2012
Magh Mela is observed during Magh month and Falgun month up to nearly 45 days. Magh Mela 2012 starts on January 9 and ends on February 20, 2012. Magh Mela snan at Prayag Sangam in Allahabad has a great significance which attracts several millions of devotees to perform holy dip in divine confluence (Triveni Sangam) of holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.
Magh Mela 2012 dates January and February 2012 – Magh Mela at Sangam Prayag in Allahabad:
Magh Mela starts on Paush Purnima (9 January 2012). Other auspicious bathing dates are Makar Sankranti on January 14, January 19 (Shattil Ekadashi), 23 January 2012 (Mauni Amavasya), 28 January (Basant Panchami), Achala Saptami or Rath Saptami (January 30, 2012) and Maghi Purnima on 7 February 2012. Officially though, Mela administration considers the last bathing of Maha Shivratri as the closing of the mela. The Maha Shivratri bathing shall commence on 20 February 2012.
Magh Mela’s main ritual involves taking a holy dip at Sangam on auspicious dates. The important bathing dates for the Mela are spread over a period of nearly 45 days. The first bathing day is on the occasion of Paush Purnima January 9, 2012. Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in Sangam during the Hindu month of Magh improves life and makes it disease free. The Magh Mela 2012 will end on Feb 20 (Mahashivratri).
It is to note that Allahabad Prayag Sangam will host Maha Kumbh Mela in 2013. It would be held in January and February in 2013.
Significance of Magh Mela 2010 – Lunar Eclipse and Solar Eclipse during Magh Mela:
Magh Mela in 2010 has a special significance due to several reasons. On the first bathing of Paush Purnima (December 31, 2009 and 1st January, 2010), there will be a lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan, whereas on the occasion of Maghi Purnima there will be a solar eclipse or Surya Grahan on Magh Amavasya day (January 15, 2010). In addition, the Snan of Mauni Amavasya and Makar Sankranti are falling on the same day (January 15, 2010) as a result of unique planetary configuration. (Courtesy: Times of India).
