Suhasini puja, also referred as Suvasini Pooja, is a ritual observed during Sharad Navaratri. There is no specific day or date to perform the puja but in some days on Kalasha Sthapana and Durgashtami day, Suhasini Puja is observed. Though, the puja is a common ritual on every Purnima, but during Navaratri days it is auspicious. The pooja involves worshipping a married woman, Sumangali, considering her as a manifestation of Goddess Durga.

In some regions, Suvasini pooja is a compulsory ritual during Sharad Navratri. As Kumari Pooja, Suhasini Puja is also performed. A married woman is offered meals, fruits, clothes along with dakshina or santarpana and worshipped as the Goddess for the day.

Rathasapthami is observed on the seventh day of the Magha Masa as per Telugu Calendar at the Tirupati Balaji Temple. Rathasapthami 2017 date is February 19. The day is also known as Surya Jayanti. At Tirupati Balaji Temple, this saptami is also known as Mini Brahmotsavams, as the processional deity of Malayappa Swamy (Sri Venkateswara or Balaji) takes a ride on seven vahanams or vehicles.

The most important event on the day is witnessing the rare sight of the first rays of the Sun falling on the forehead of Balaji mounted on the Golden Surya Prabha Vahanam on the morning of Magh Saptami. This event will be witnessed from the north-west corner of the temple.
On the day, Balaji gives darshan to devotees on the day mounted atop seven different vahanams (vehicles) including Surya Prabha, Chinnasesha, Garuda Vahanam, Hanumanta Vahanam, Kalpavriksha, Sarvabhoopala and Chandraprabha. Devotees can get a glimpse of the Venkateshwara atop each Vahana along the four mada streets at Tirupati.

On the Ratha Saptami day, Surya (Sun God) riding chariot drawn by seven horses is worshipped. It is said that the earth's inclination towards the sun is steepest on the Ratha Saptami day.

The folk songs in the evening of Lohri, make the environment musically beautiful. The fascinating songs are such a kind that even for ones a Bairagi(holy man/traveller) may also forget his way. And, the most important is Bhangra and, Gidda performed by charming ladies, which can’t be forgot. As per the Hindu religion, it is believed that what ever we donate something in fire, it directly reach to our God and ancestors. On the day of Lohdi, the swinging crops from farm are brought home, then it is burnt in fire.Dancing and singing people move around it and do a thanks giving. Here also, there is a different style of worshiping God.

The echo of Bhagra, fire of woods in the evening and the smell of food items dedicated to fire, binds one village to another and one house to the other. This celebration is carried out till late night. Beats of huge drums, which tire the people people playing it, but the moments and dancing of legs don’t stop and together the taste of Rewdi and peanut is enjoyed the whole night. The color of Lohri is dimmed after the first rays of morning.

Although the festival of Lohri brings in happiness for every class and age people of north India. But, it is particularly special for young men, women and newly married couples. Today, youth, girls and guys, dress up beautifully and organise a competition of signing. With the burning of wood in fire, the newly married couple wish for their happy and peaceful married life. At the places of cultural functions, the preparation of Lohri starts a day before the day of festival.

As the festival of Lohri is celebrated just an evening before Makar Sankranti. And, the festival has a direct relation with sun entering in Capricorn sign. Sun itself is a factor of fire and power. Kushmanda navami, also known as kushmand Ninth, is observed on Shukla Paksha Navami day in Kartik month. Kushmanda Navami 2016 date is November 4. Ujjaini Mahankali Temple Bonalu 2016 at Secunderabad Hyderabad

Bonalu is an important annual ritual held at the famous Sri Ujjaini Mahankali Temple at Secunderabad in the Telugu Month of Ashada. Bonalu is an important Hindu festival dedicated to Mother Goddess in the Telangana region and is a major event in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Sri Ujjaini Mahankali Temple is an important temple dedicated to Shakti worship in Telangana. The deity was installed here in the beginning of 19th century by some devotees from Ujjaini in Madhya Pradesh.

The devotees were part of an army contingent and when they arrived at Secunderabad, the place was hit by a major cholera outbreak in which thousands of people died. The cholera outbreak subsided after prayers were offered to the deity.

For Ganesh Chaturthi 2016, Khairatabad Ganesh idol in Hyderabad would be the one among the largest Ganesha idols in India. Deeparadhana, Importance of Lighting Lamps during Pujas and Rituals

Deeparadhana or lighting lamps or diyas is an important aspect of any puja or Hindu ritual. The importance of deeparadhana is mentioned in many ancient scriptures and the tradition has been in existence since the Stone Age. Apart from religious angle, lighting diyas also has the natural side of benefits for our health and for better environment.

A diya consists of a small earthen pot (it may also of gold, bronze, copper, etc..), oil, and the cotton wick. When we light the twisted cotton wick which is placed in oil, it burns and gives us the light. The flame is considered as the source of heat, light and the energy. It also helps us as a good germicide.

Deepa or diya is also lit during offering Aarti to God or Goddess at the end of any puja. It symbolizes the divine aura and also helps devotees to have a clear glimpse at the idol of the deity. After performing Aarti, we put our palms on the aarti flame to receive the divine energy of the God into us. It reflects the siddhanta of Aatma and Paramatma.

Lighting diya also symbolizes the dispersal of ignorance and awakening of the divine light within us.

In olden days, rishis worshipped the fire and Jyoti (diya / flame) as it considered as the purest form of energy. It gets all the impurities but provides us with the greatest form of energy, light. Many Upanishads, Samhitas, Brahmanas and Puranas have the significance of Deeparadhana.

As per the Skanda Purana, “among the light of fire, the light of the Sun, the light of the Moon, the lamp is the best of lights” (Translation).

Diyas or lamps also have some religious meanings. Diya symbolized the energy of Goddess Lakshmi and lighting diyas keeps us away from darkness of ‘Agnana’ and welcomes us into the world of ‘Gnana’ (light). We can see three colors internally in any diya – White, red and blue. There three colors indicate the forces of Goddess Saraswati (Gnana or wisdom), Goddess Lakshmi (poshana or nutrition) and Goddess Parvati (dhairya or strength).

As per Hinduism and Puja rituals, the number of cotton wicks to use, the oil to use, and the pot to use will be based on the puja or vrata which we will be observing. Generally, the earthen pots and ghee are the finest items to use in lighting diyas.

Dahi Handi Breaking Ceremony in Maharashtra Sri Krishna Jayanti 2016

The festival of Sri Krishna Janmashtami or Sri Krishna Jayanti is noted for the Dahi Handi breaking ceremony in Maharashtra. In 2011, date of Dahi Handi is August 22. Sri Krishna Jayanti is on August 21 in Maharashtra. Dahi Handi is a perfect amalgamation of sport and spirituality and provides youngsters an opportunity to be adventurous and to show team spirit and unity. Young boys make human pyramids to break the earthen pot hanging high above and the attempt to break the pot is accompanied by the chanting of ‘Govinda ala re’ and by loud sounds of cymbals and drums.

Dahi Handi is observed a day after Gokulashtami or Janmashtami. The festival is also known as ‘Gopal kala’. The name comes from a dish or a mixture of yoghurt, pounded rice

and jaggery, which is offered to Krishna on the day. The same mixture is placed in the Dahi Handi pot.

Legend has it that Sri Krishna was very fond of curd and butter. He and his friends used steal butter from the houses in Vrindavan. To save their curd and butter from Sri Krishna and his friends, women used to keep it in a pot and hung it from the ceiling of their houses so that it could not be easily reached. But Krishna and his friends used to form human pyramid and easily steal the milk products. Taking inspiration from this ‘leela’ divine play of Lord Krishna, today the same challenge is posed before youngsters in the form of Dahi Handi by women.

The Dahi Handi pot which is hung at a considerable height is an open challenge to the young boys in the area. The pot contains Dahi poha – a mixture of beaten rice (poha), curd, sugar and pickle. The pot is also decorated with flowers and currency notes. The young boys in the region form human pyramids, sometimes reaching up to eleven stories, to reach the pot.

Women and girls won’t allow the young boys to get the Dahi Handi pot easily; they splash water on the boys and try to break the pyramids.

Today, Dahi Handi is a major event in major cities and towns in Maharashtra and involves lot of money and large crowds. Prize for breaking the Dahi Handi pot ranges from 1000 Rupees to 2 million rupees.

Upakarma August 2016 Date of Yagnopavitam Changed

Upakarma is a ritual associated with Hindu Brahmin community especially in South India and it is the day the sacred thread worn by Brahmins known as ‘Yagnopavitam’ is changed. Upakarma date in 2011 is on August 13. There are Brahmins who are the followers of Rig Veda, Yajur Veda and Sama Veda and they have separate dates for Upakarma. The Upakarma for Sama Vedi Brahmins in 2011 is on August 29. The ritual is also known as Avani Avittam in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The ritual is observed on the Shravan Purnima day.

Legend has it that Lord Hayagriva, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, got back the Vedas stolen by the Asuras (Demons) on the Shravan Purnima day.

Upakarma means ‘the beginning.’ After a holy dip in a sacred river or pond or Tritha, male Brahmins change the sacred thread and wear a new one. Symbolically the ritual means a new beginning.

Students also begin the study of the Vedas on this day.

Deepa Puja is an auspicious observance to perform on Ashada Amavasya day. In 2011, the date of Deepa Puja or Diya Pooja is July 30 in Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Telugu calendars. As per North Indian Hindu calendar Ashada Amavasya Deepa Puja is July 1. On the day of Deepa Puja, people clean and decorate their houses. Devotees clean all diyas (deepas) they had in house and decorate them with colours. They clean and sanctify a table and decorate it with rangoli (kolam) designs or patterns and keep all the diyas on the table. Then, they lit the diyas and perform puja.

Deepa Puja is dedicated to the ones Ishta Devata (Favorite God) and to Pancha Bhootas (five primordial elements – Air, Water, Fire, Sky and the Earth). Some devotees dedicate Deepa Puja or the Deepa Jyothi (sacred flame) to the Mother Goddesses – Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Parvati and Goddess Saraswati.
In the evening of Deepa puja day, all the diyas are lit once again and kept around the house just like Diwali Puja (Deepavali Pooja). People believe that the sparkling light of diyas drives out all the evil and bad powers by which they are suffered and welcomes new brightness into their life. They also believe that Deepa Puja provides them Asta Aishwarayas (8 types of wealth). Just after the day of Deepa Puja (Ashada Amavasya), the holy Shravan month begins.

Facing East, this temple is raised over double terraced platform. Originally hails the super structure of the Mahameru Style. The Sanctum is Pancharatha on plan and consists of Sandhara Garbhagriha, pillared Mandapa, crowned by a domical ceiling. Each niche of the buttress of Garbagriha has beautiful Brahmanical deities.
